The mosque was built in the late twelfth century by Sultan Yaqub el Mansour (1184-1199). He wanted to build the largest mosque, but the project was interrupted by his death in 1199 and the mosque remains unfinished and will be devastated by the earthquake of 1755 the remains of the mosque's minaret, some columns and sections of wall have great pace and hint at the magnitude of the initial monument. The minaret, square, high amid the debris of the four hundred columns, towers over 44m in height. The walls half a meter thick, forming a gently sloping ramp amount spin around six superimposed centerpieces. Its decor is simple and varied: large simple tracery.
